Every day, web sites are getting bigger and bigger. Whether corporate or personal,
your web site probably has a lot of pages. When you want to change something that's
on all the pages, such as a link bar, it has probably been an annoyance in the
past.
Search and replacing changes all of that. Search and Replace 98 pulls off
this task with ease. It has great options, a very easy to use interface, and
works very quickly. Click on the screenshot on the right to see the main screen
of the program. You'll see the "Find Text" and the "Replace Text" tabs which
simply specify which one you're putting in. You can even put in multi-line text
blocks to search and/or replace! You specify the directory and the type of file
to search and replace. Not only does it do HTML, but it will also do ASP, INI,
LOG, TXT and DAT files! It also has an option to process all files (with any
extension) if you have other file types.
If you click on the screenshot on the left you'll see the settings screen. This is much
more sophisticated than most other search and replace programs we've seen. It allows you
you to select whether or not you want a prompt for each file. If you have certain files
in the directory that you don't want processed then this works great. You can also have
the program make a backup of all changed files, which could easily need to be used with
this sort of thing. Filters are another thing we love. If you do have a lot of files in
the directory you can filter out certain file types. For instance if you want to search
and replace some HTML and ASP files, but there are also GIF files in the directory than
you can set a filter to skip the GIF files. This helps speed the search and replaces up
if you have a large site.
The thing we love best about the program is it's price. Free! That's right, the program
